Bio -
Joyce Elias is a mixed media artist based in Evanston, Illinois. She is a graduate of The San Francisco Art Institute and earned an art teaching credential through The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Her artwork encompasses a wide range of media including painting, printmaking, collage, woodworking, pottery, and photography. Her artistic career led her to jewelry design at an international company and set design for a children’s theater company. In addition, Joyce teaches art to children and adults in a variety of settings.
Joyce’s current focus is on her Artists Weather Project which launched in 2015. The project began when she decided to embrace the harsh midwest winters and to incorporate them into her artistic practice. She photographs nature on a daily basis; then each photo is assigned the day’s weather colors and is posted on social media. These photos are the inspiration for her colorful paintings, collages, and wood constructions.
The Artist’s Weather Project has opened up some unexpected opportunities for Joyce. The project has included gallery exhibitions, a summer teaching position at Chicago Botanic Garden, and an invitation to show her work at The Chicago Climate Festival. Joyce is looking forward to expanding The Artists Weather Project through more gallery shows, artistic collaborations, teaching, and creating a much dreamed about community mural.
